The Old Sunday Schoolroom
Courses are held in the schoolroom & studio workshop, which is insulated with wool, plastered with wattle & daub, the hazel & clay taken from the field.
Making a bird or animal you inevitably get closer to its nature, because you need to understand both shape & structure, analyse the intricate details of fur & plumage & capture its special look or ‘jizz’.
All you need is a fine felting needle, a bird/animal book with really good pictures, a small pile of wool & some heartfelt observation of the lovely details of eyes, noses, ears and feathers.
A felting needle has tiny barbs that draw the wool fibres back & forth, working the wool into a firmly felted mass. I use natural wool from rare breeds of sheep as well as the plant-dyed colours of madder, indigo & onion skins.
